It Takes Two to make a thing go right. It Takes Two to make it outta sight. Hit it!

And just like the 1988 hit song by New York City hip hop duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z, we’re going to do just that. This two-tone, oversized fit jacket is all about rocking right now. Inspired by the organic curves often found in athletic-wear, the It Takes Two Jacket showcases a round style line across the entire garment uniquely dividing the jacket in two colors. We all know balance is key and the It Takes Two Jacket knows just how to make two sides Yin & Yang in perfect harmony. And what’s better than one jacket? It takes two garments to find that out…with the matching It Takes Two Pants, of course.

The It Takes Two Jacket is designed for light to medium weight woven or knit fabrications. The jacket is designed to combine two colors of fabric, whether those colors are solid or print is up to you! It is recommended to use the same base fabric for both colors as the balance of the garment may feel off if you choose to combine two very different base fabrics. (i.e. Do not choose silk for one color and canvas for the other, if you want the same result as the intended design.) Fabrics with a nice drape will help the silhouette relax around the body, while materials that are stiffer in nature will create a more structural shape. The pattern is drafted with ample ease, so lighter weight fabrics that drape smoothly will give that soft gathered appearance around the hems and flow perfectly up to the shoulders.

Woven fabric recommendations include plain weaves, twills, or textured linen, cotton, viscose, or Tencel compositions, staying under the 10oz (339gsm) weight.

Knit fabric recommendations include French terry, sweatshirt fleece, or jersey cotton, bamboo, wool, or Tencel compositions, staying under the 10oz (339gsm) weight. Note that small amounts of elastane/spandex may cause the curved seams to ripple. As this pattern can be used for both knits and wovens, there is no minimum stretch percentage requirement. If you choose to make this pattern in a knit fabrication, you may wish to size down.

Fusible interfacing is recommended for the collar, facing, and bound buttonholes. Use a light to medium weight woven fusible interfacing for woven fabrications. Use a light to medium weight knit or stretch fusible interfacing for knit fabrications.

The Fit Description

The It Takes Two Jacket is intended to fall past your low hip in terms of length. If you would like a shorter or longer jacket, use the shorten/lengthen line on the corresponding pattern pieces to adjust for your personal preferences. The sleeve pattern pieces also include a shorten/lengthen line for adjusting the sleeve length.  The sleeve cuff is meant to hit cinch around your wrist with a bit of volume pooling above the elastic tunnel. If you want less fabric draping around your wrist and forearm, then shorten your sleeves to your desired length. The elastic also makes it very easy to push up your sleeves and have them stay put! The armholes are drafted as a drop shoulder placement. If you have slimmer or broader shoulders, you may wish to size down or up according to the cross shoulder measurement in the finished garment measurement chart.

If you are between sizes, size down.

Adjusting For Height & Proportions

As the pattern is drafted for someone 5’8” (172cm) tall, you may need to shorten/lengthen the body and sleeves for your personal height. You also may decide to shorten/lengthen the collar height for your personal proportions. There are A LOT of pattern pieces because of the style lines. Make sure to follow the guide for pattern & fit adjustments on page 6 in the instruction booklet to double check you adjust all of the required pattern pieces.

Pattern pieces #1 Bottom Front, #6 Front Pockets, #7 Bottom Right Back, #11 Right Sleeve, and #12 Upper Left Sleeve all have shorten/lengthen lines. You will need to make sure you adjust all of the pieces the same amount to make sure the pattern comes together smoothly. The shorten/lengthen line is strategically placed so you do not interfere with the horizontal style line combining the two fabrics.

You will also need to shorten or lengthen your zipper length requirement the same amount you choose to shorten/lengthen your pattern pieces. Separating zippers must be shortened from the top edge if you’re planning to make needed adjustments to a finished zipper length.

SIZE SELECTION

Find the size that corresponds closest to your personal measurements in the size chart below. Patterns are designed for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person. The following measurements are needed to determine your size:

FULL BUST | The fullest part of your chest, often times across the apex

WAIST | The smallest part of your torso, directly underneath your rib cage and above your hip bones

LOW HIP | The widest part of your hips, patterns drafted for 8” below the waistline

Choose your size based on your full bust measurement. If you are between sizes, size down. The fit is intended to be oversized, so the pattern has a significant amount of ease built in. If you prefer your garments to fit closer to the body, choose your size based on your preferred amount of ease using the finished garment measurements listed. The jacket is only fitted at the sleeve hems with elastic cinching in the sleeve openings. The body hem has a drawstring that can be tied at either side seam to cinch in the bottom of the jacket. While the finished garment appears more complicated because of the style lines, at the heart of this pattern is a simple, zipper jacket that is a straightforward fit! You want enough ease in the chest, but other than that, the jacket should fall naturally around the shoulders and hang loosely around the hips.

If you choose to make this pattern in a knit fabrication, you may wish to size down.
