Easy to throw on any day, any season, and any age – this dress has got you covered!
Literally, though. The Cinch Me I’m Dreaming Dress has that perfect balance of shoulder and chest coverage, with just a peek of skin showing through that sweet gently curved v-neckline. The dress can be worn loosely hanging around the body or pulled tightly around the waist using the drawstrings. The short sleeve and mini length view offers a bit more of a flirty and thriving vibe, while the long sleeve and midi length view provides that modern day prairie aesthetic that strongly encourages you to run through a field of grass. While you are there, gaze up at the clouds, soak in the sun and dream a little dream.

The Cinch Me I’m Dreaming Dress is designed for light to medium weight woven fabrics. Choosing a woven fabric below 7oz or 240gsm will yield the best results not only for your comfort, but also for the construction and enjoyment while sewing. Think airy cottons, soft linens, silky tencel or viscose, or satiny silks. Fabrics with a relaxed drape will create a nice flowing dress while materials with a bit more stiffness will provide a more dramatic, structured silhouette. Due to the nature of this design, there are lots of pattern pieces – lending itself to color and print combos! This dress can easily be made combining lots of light-to-medium weight fabrics to make your own unique masterpiece.
The Cinch Me I’m Dreaming Dress uses a substantial amount of bias tape to create the channels within the interior of the body, the drawstring ties that cinch in the side seams, and the bias bound sleeve hems. There are detailed instructions for creating your own bias tape within the sewing guidelines. You can play around with a contrast or complimentary color pop for these little details, making this dress even more customizable!
Fusible interfacing is recommended for the neckline to help maintain the shape. Use a light to medium weight woven fusible interfacing designed for woven fabrications.
The Fit Description
The Cinch Me I’m Dreaming Dress is an easeful garment that, thankfully, doesn’t require *too* much finessing to acquire the perfect fit. A great fit is kind of just built into the design itself because you can cinch in the ties around the waist to your liking! The bottom center front neckline is intended to fall at the bottom of your sternum (the bone ending just below your bust). See notes below for adjusting for your personal height & proportions, as you may wish to shorten or lengthen the neckline to fall at the correct placement.
The top row of ties is shaped to fall beneath the bust in a curved fashion.
The middle row of ties is designed to hit a bit above your natural waist.
The bottom row of ties is meant to wrap around your high hip.
The pockets are placed 1” (2.5cm) below the bottom row of ties to allow for the full cinch effect to take place. This may feel a bit lower down than your standard pocket placement, but it is to preserve the beauty of the ~cinch~! The raglan seams have a relaxed fit allowing for a full range of motion – whether you’re apple picking, hailing a cab, or at a dance party, you can move those arms! Both views include a lantern sleeve shape, which means the outer sleeve seam curves away from the body. There is a bottom cuff piece that brings the sleeve shape back in towards the body. Both the short and long sleeve options are slightly oversized in design, giving a bit of a *slouchy* effect in fabrics that drape and a bit of a *structured* volume for stiffer fabrics. For the long sleeve option, the midway front sleeve dart and back sleeve inverted pleats should hit just above your elbow bend. The short mini dress view, well, it isn’t THAT mini. The intended fit is for the hem to fall at about mid thigh. The long midi dress view is intended to fall a bit above your ankle.
If you are between sizes, size down.
Adjusting For Height & Proportions
The pattern is drafted for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person so you may wish the shorten or lengthen accordingly. Pattern pieces #1 Front Bodice, #2 Back Bodice, and #11 Front Neckline all have a shorten/lengthen line which will adjust the overall body length as well as shift the waist pieces up or down accordingly. The #3 Front Upper Mid Tier, #4 Back Upper Mid Tier, #5 Front Lower Mid Tier, and #6 Back Lower Mid Tier pattern pieces all include a shorten/lengthen line so you can be really exact with the placement of each row of ties for your proportions.
Pattern pieces #8 Back Short Skirt, #7 Front Short Skirt, #10 Back Long Skirt, and #9 Front Long Skirt all have a shorten/lengthen line as well which will purely change the overall body length. For the long midi dress view, you may wish the disperse your adjustments across both the short skirt pieces and the long skirt pieces to maintain even proportions in the design.
On pattern pieces #16 Front Long Sleeve and #17 Back Long Sleeve, use the upper bicep shorten/lengthen line to raise or lower the dart & pleats location to align just above your natural elbow bend. The shorten/lengthen line at the lower forearm can be used to raise or lower the overall sleeve length. The intended fit is for the long sleeve hem to fall at your wrist. On pattern pieces #13 Front Short Sleeve and #14 Back Short Sleeve, use the shorten/lengthen line to raise or lower the overall sleeve length. The intended fit is for the short sleeve to fall at your mid bicep at a slight flared out angle.
You can refer to the finished garment measurements to compare your personal measurements and determine how much length is needed to remove or add.
SIZE SELECTION
Find the size that corresponds closest to your personal measurements in the size chart below. Patterns are designed for a 5’8” (172cm) tall person. The following measurements are needed to determine your size:
HIGH BUST | The circumference above your chest, under arms, and below your shoulder blades
FULL BUST | The fullest part of your chest, often times across the apex
WAIST | The smallest part of your torso, directly underneath your rib cage and above your hip bones
LOW HIP | The widest part of your hips, patterns drafted for 8” (20.3cm) below the waistline
Choose your size based on your full bust measurement and make necessary pattern adjustments from there. The full bust is the most fitted area of the dress. Overall, there is ample ease included in the pattern to accommodate a relaxed fitting garment that is only meant to be tightly fitted when the ties cinch in the waist while wearing. The sleeves are a raglan, lantern shape that fall gently around the shoulder with a curved outer seam. The neckline should fall naturally around the body, lying flat around the back neck and across the chest.
Compare your personal measurements to the finished garment measurements below to determine your desired amount of ease. See additional fit and pattern adjustments on pages 9 and 10 within the instruction booklet after download.
